background
Designing for the Chinese market
The automotive HMI ecosystem in China is unlike the rest of the world. With the tech giants and EV startups continuing pushing the boundaries of automotive intelligence, customers place high value on in-car digital experience.
During my time at Digital Creative Asia, a Shanghai-based design agency, I worked on this navigation app redesign project as a core part of the client's major OS upgrading, bringing more customization and intuitiveness to the driver experience of the renown traditional car brand.
task
Upgrading the in-car navigation app from map provider's standard version to a brand-exclusive experience

Design goals
1
Brand identity
Apply the brand visual standard - colour, size, icon, and typography - to the UI and map elements, to create a seamless experience across applications.
2
Safety and intuitiveness
Provide sufficient and only relevant information; present with easy-to-scan hierarchy; adopt UX that users are already familiar with; reduce steps.
3
Adaptability
Create one adaptable design for varying screen sizes and hardware performance so it can be reusable on old and new cars to reduce development investment.

At kickoff, the request was intentionally high level: design an in-person tour for orientation that feels engaging and interactive.
A scavenger hunt quickly emerged as a natural direction, but we were still 99.9% away from the final product.
